Data Analytics

"Data analysis, also known as analysis of data or data analytics, is a process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision-making."                                                                

• Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches, encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names, in different business, science, and social science domains.    

Data Science

"Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms" 

• Data science is a "concept to unify statistics, data analysis and their related methods" in order to "understand and analyze actual phenomena" with data.

• It employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the broad areas of mathematics, statistics, information science, and computer science, in particular from the sub-domains of machine learning, classification, cluster analysis, data mining, databases, and visualization.
• Data Science and Data Analytics is often used interchangeably. 
• Data Science is multi-disciplinary

 Davenport and Harris, Competing on Analytics, 2007 defined Analytics as below

Analytics has been defined as
 “the extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive models, and fact-based management to drive decisions and actions”

Business Intelligence

"Business Intelligence (BI) comprises the set of strategies, processes, applications, data, technologies and technical architectures which are used by enterprises to support the collection, data analysis, presentation and dissemination of business information." 

• BI technologies provide historical, current and predictive views of business operations. 

Gartner defined Business Intelligence in 1996

Making sound business decisions based on accurate and current information takes more than intuition.Data analysis, reporting, and query tools can help business users wade through a sea of data to synthesize valuable information from it - today these tools collectively fall into a category called "Business Intelligence."
